The Novocheremushki district court in Moscow sentenced her to a fine or 1000 Rubles, for installing the Ukrainian flag on the top of Gazprom building—an act which the Court regarded as hooliganism. ‘The penalty of 1,000 Rubles is too high a sum for low-budget organization. How does one imagine a feminist movement? Traditionally feminist movements have been about campaigning for reproductive rights, equal pay, women’s suffrage, protesting to increase awareness of sexual harassment, domestic violence and many other issues affecting women’s lives. Yet, in Ukraine this has taken on a new form – topless protest.

On the February 28, 2011, a New Zealander named Greg won a radio competition titled ‘Win a Ukrainian Wife’. ‘The Rock FM’ radio offered the cost of Greg’s travel and living giving him an opportunity to search for a Ukrainian wife. Femen activists dressed as brides and shouted out against this visit chanting slogans like ‘Ukraine is not a brothel’, ‘Welcome to hell’, ‘Bride for Wildman’. This activism and the international media criticism forced Greg to refuse the offer.

The protest was against ‘Kahn’s attitude towards women’. Kahn had been accused of assaulting a maid in his hotel suite; hence the housemaid makeup of the protestors. Kahn’s remarks about women, in the follow-up interviews and questionings were scandalized for being caustic and derogatory.

With international ambitions the Femen went on Euro-tour to Italy, Switzerland, France, Austria, Russia and Belarus. The 'Occupy Wall Street' protests in New York also witnessed topless protests. The issues raised by Femen have grown to include nuclear power relations and Saudi's ban on women driving vehicles where the slogan “Cars to women, camels to the men” is used. Some of their controversial protests have been directed against national leaders such as Vladimir Putin(slogan ‘God chase away the Czar’), Silvio Berlusconi (‘Finish Berlusconi’) and Aleksandr Lukashenko.

Most of its demonstrations were staged in Kiev, actions were held in cities like Odessa, Dnipropetrovsk, and Zaporizhia. Most of the protests have been ‘topless’; however in 2010 there was one ‘bottomless’ as well. One FEMEN protester exposed her buttocks outside a locked toilet in a demonstration to protest about the lack of public toilets in Kiev.
