The peacefully protesting
college students resorted to violence in Chennai and Puducherry over the
past two days. Almost 2,000 students were arrested when they took to
the streets. They were part of the Students’ Federation for Free Eelam.
Union
Home Minister P. Chidambaram’s house in Nungambakkam was attacked.
Students climbed the gate but security personnel prevented them from
getting in. Similarly, there was an attempt to picket Shastri Bhavan.
Karthik, a student from a Meenambakkam college, slit his wrist when
arrested and had to be rushed to the hospital. When asked why they were
taking such extreme steps, one of the protestors said, ‘We don’t care
about the resolution. We first want a free Eelam’.
